Discover how faith, stress reduction, and identity shifts can support autoimmune healing naturally for women over 40 by Leah Cheshire, NBC-HWC
If you’re a woman over 40 navigating autoimmune symptoms, you may feel like you’re doing everything right. You’ve been changing your diet, taking supplements, exercising more, and researching endlessly.
And yet, you still feel stuck.
Here’s the truth many women are missing: Healing is not just physical. It’s also emotional and spiritual.
And perhaps most importantly: You can pursue healing without living in fear.
The Stress-Autoimmune Connection
Autoimmune conditions are deeply connected to the nervous system.
When your body is in a constant state of stress, often called “fight or flight,” it increases inflammation, disrupts digestion, and interferes with your body’s natural ability to heal.
For many women, this stress doesn’t just come from external circumstances.
It comes from:
- Trying to follow the “perfect” diet
- Constantly worrying about symptoms
- Feeling like your body is working against you
Over time, this creates a cycle of fear → stress → inflammation → symptoms.
How Faith Supports Physical Healing
Here’s the beautiful part: Your body was designed to heal, but it needs to feel safe to do so.
Faith practices like:
- Prayer
- Scripture reading
- Stillness
- Trust in God
…can help shift your body into a parasympathetic state, your “rest and heal” mode.
“Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Stillness is not just spiritual. It’s biological. It’s physiological.
When you slow down and trust God, your body begins to calm. And that’s when healing can begin.
A Simple Breath and Prayer Practice
One of the most powerful tools you can use daily is combining breath with prayer.
Try this:
- Inhale slowly for 4 seconds
- Hold for 2–3 seconds
- Exhale for 6 seconds
As you breathe:
Inhale: Say “Lord, I release my stress.”
Exhale: Say “I receive Your peace.”
Just a few minutes of this practice can:
- Lower stress hormones
- Calm your nervous system
- Reduce inflammation signals in the body
I often do this when in the car in traffic, when at a doctor’s appointment, or whenever I’m feeling anxious during the day.
Letting Go of Perfection
Many women unknowingly block their own healing by striving for perfection.
You may feel like you need:
- The perfect diet
- The perfect morning routine
- The perfect supplement plan
But perfectionism keeps your body in a stress response.
And stress… fuels inflammation.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9
Healing doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly.
It comes from:
✔ Consistency
✔ Grace
✔ Trust
You Are Not Your Diagnosis
This may be the most important shift you can make.
Many women begin to identify with their illness:
- “I am my autoimmune condition.”
- “My body is broken.”
- “I’ll always struggle.”
But that identity keeps you stuck.
Instead, step into a healing identity by saying things like:
- “My body is capable of healing.”
- “God is restoring me day by day.”
- “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Psalm 139:14
When your identity shifts, your choices begin to shift naturally. And these choices gradually become healthy habits.
Identity-Based Habits that Support Healing
Instead of asking:
👉 “What do I need to do?”
Start asking:
👉 “Who do I want to become?”
For example:
- “I am a woman who nourishes my body.”
- “I am a woman who prioritizes rest.”
- “I am a woman who trusts God with my health.”
These identity-based habits create lasting, sustainable change, without overwhelm.
Finding Purpose in Your Healing Journey
Your diagnosis is not the end of your story.
In many cases, it becomes the beginning of a deeper transformation.
A transformation that includes:
- Greater awareness of your body
- Stronger faith
- Clearer purpose
- A more intentional life
God can use your healing journey for something meaningful. Even in the hard moments. And maybe even to encourage others.
Hope and Encouragement
You are not just a diagnosis.
You are not broken.
You are not alone.
Your body was created with the ability to heal.
And your life still has purpose.
You don’t have to live in fear.
You can move forward with peace, trust, and confidence.
