Essential Oils are compounds extracted from plants; the oils take on the plant’s scent and flavor or “essence.” They are used in the practice of aromatherapy (inhalation) of the oils or topically (on the skin). If you do use them topically, however, be sure to dilute them with carrier oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, or almond oil. Otherwise, many of the oils are too concentrated and might cause allergic reactions such as rashes.

Benefits: Some people feel essential oils help with stress, anxiety, headaches, sleep, reduction of inflammation, and immunity. Remember everyone’s body is bio-individual and may react differently so trial and error is the best way to determine if essential oils are beneficial for you.

Essential oils can also be diffused in your home or car as a natural deodorizer to freshen. In addition, some people make DIY products using essential oils such as lotions, hand sanitizer, makeup, soaps, or lip balms.

Essential oils that many people use include:

Peppermint oil – helps with digestion and energy

Lavender – used for stress and relaxation

Tea Tree -used to fight infections and helps boost immunity

Lemon – helps with digestion, headaches, and mood

Citronella – helps to naturally repel mosquitoes

When looking for essential oils, how do you choose the correct one? Only use high-quality oils. Be sure to review EO for these qualities:

  1. Purity – made of aromatic plant compounds without synthetic oils, fragrances, or additives; the plant’s botanical name should be listed
  2. Quality – look for chemical-free EO that has been extracted through mechanical cold pressing or distillation; should be changed the least by the extraction process
  3. Reputation – only buy a brand that has a reputation for high-quality products

A Note of caution: Although something is natural, it does not necessarily mean it is safe for you or your family. This is also true for essential oils. So be aware that some people can respond with side effects including rashes, headaches, asthmatic attacks, or other allergic reactions. Some people do consume therm internally, but there is research to dispute the safety. I personally do NOT use them internally.

Essential oils are a complementary therapeutic tool for overall health. They do smell wonderful, freshen, can help with minor health concerns, and are non-toxic. Just be sure the brand you use is a good quality as noted above. There are many great brands on the market today.
