How to Renew Your Mind After 40 When You Feel Stuck

October is World Menopause Month — and it’s the perfect time to talk about something many women over 40 experience but rarely say out loud: that feeling of being stuck.

You might be doing “all the right things” — eating well, managing stress, trying to rest — and still feel like your body and emotions just aren’t cooperating. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Both perimenopause and menopause can challenge not only your hormones, but also your mindset and faith. The good news? You don’t have to stay stuck. You can find peace, clarity, and even joy again. By learning to renew your mind.

Maybe you’ve been feeling frustrated with your body, tired of the emotional ups and downs, or just not quite yourself lately. Maybe you’ve even prayed for clarity or strength but instead you’re tired and not sure what to do.

I want to share some encouragement and practical ways to reset your thoughts and find peace again — not by pushing harder, but by renewing your mind. Let’s look at three practical, faith-based ways to do that.

Shift Your Focus From “Losing” to “Becoming”

You know, a lot of women describe menopause as a season of loss — loss of youth, fertility, energy, or identity. But what if this isn’t a season of losing… what if it’s a season of becoming?

Becoming wiser.
Becoming more authentic.
Becoming more at peace with who God made you to be.

Romans 12:2 says, ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ That renewal starts when we shift our focus from what’s changing around us to what God is doing within us.

Try this simple mindset practice:

Each morning, write down 1-3 things you’re grateful for in this season. And not just thank you for my husband or my child. Be really specific. For example, thank you that my husband cleaned up the dishes after dinner or thank you that my child took out the trash without being told. Or thank you that there was sunshine this morning so I could take a walk after the weekend’s rain.

Then speak one affirmation out loud, something like:
‘I am being renewed from the inside out.’
‘I am becoming the woman God designed me to be in this new chapter.’

That simple reframe moves your mind from frustration to faith. And that’s where transformation begins.

Care for Your Body as a Temple, Not a Project

When you’re in perimenopause and menopause, your body can feel unpredictable. Maybe you’re dealing with fatigue, mood swings, or that stubborn midsection weight that just won’t budge. It’s easy to start viewing your body as a problem to fix.

But 1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Your body is not broken. It’s wise. It’s communicating. It’s asking for care, not criticism.

So instead of pushing harder, try nurturing your body in small, intentional ways:

  • Drink water and nourish your body with hormone-balancing foods.
  • Move daily, not to punish your body but to support your energy and mood.
  • Use small amounts of time as self-care blocks for praying, taking deep breaths, or simply reflecting.

Every time you care for your body, you’re sending your mind a message that says: ‘I am safe, I am worthy, I am loved.’

Anchor Yourself in God’s Promises, Not Your Circumstances

When hormones fluctuate, emotions can follow. And sometimes it feels like your mood or motivation just disappears.

That’s why it’s so important to anchor your mind in truth, not temporary feelings. Remember feelings are fickle. They change day to day or even moment to moment.

When you start to feel overwhelmed, pause and pray this:
‘Lord, remind me of who I am in You.’

Then replace that spiral of worry with Scripture-based truth. I like to keep a little ‘Truth Journal’ nearby filled with verses that speak to me when I feel weary or uncertain.

Some of my favorites:
Isaiah 46:4: ‘Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He… I will sustain you and rescue you.’
Philippians 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’

You can even play worship music or Scripture meditations when you’re getting ready in the morning or driving. I like to listen to the Bible in a year and do so when I’m getting dressed in the morning. It helps shift your focus from what feels heavy to what is eternal.

Because God’s promises are steady. Even when your hormones aren’t!

So if you’ve been feeling stuck lately, remember:

  • You can renew your mind by shifting from losing to becoming.
  • You can honor your body as a temple instead of treating it like a project.
  • And you can anchor yourself in God’s promises (the truth), no matter what your hormones are doing!

Perimenopause and Menopause are not the end of something. They are the beginning of a new, beautiful chapter where you can live with more wisdom, grace, and peace than ever before. Maybe God is actually using this season to renew you from the inside out!
